Atlanta vs. Charlotte for 'King of South'

Atlanta Journal-Constitution weighed in last weekend on the Charlotte-Atlanta rivalry with a piece by former Observer reporter Dan Chapman: Rivalry to be economic King of South heats up.
Read it, then read the comments. Then tell me whether you don't suspect that a lot of the talk about how well (!!) Charlotte has dealt with growth and transportation comes from Atlanta types hoping to goad their legislature with some jealousy. The story says the Georgia leg won't let Atlanta or other metro regions impose sales taxes for roads, and won't even let MARTA use its own money to fill budget holes.

Is Charlotte doing things better than Atlanta? Depends on what you look at. Definitely we're doing better at tying land use to transit – at requiring transit-oriented development along our light rail line. Atlanta didn't do that during MARTA's earliest decades and results show.
Is Charlotte doing any better at controlling sprawl? That's a tough question. I think some of the counties and smaller towns in the region (Cabarrus County, Davidson, Belmont, etc.) are, indeed, doing better. Further, N.C. annexation laws have left Charlotte in a healthier situation and have allowed the city limits to expand, instead of being hemmed in like the actual city of Atlanta itself.

Yet Charlotte and Mecklenburg have done virtually nothing to preserve farms or any section of the county from suburban-style development, other than a few county parkland purchases. Eventually every square foot of the county will be developed except for those parts purchased for parkland or privately donated to land conservation groups such as the Catawba Lands Conservancy. No serious farmland or forestland protection measures have been taken by local governments other than Davidson.

Atlanta is definitely bigger. Is it better? I think that depends on what you're looking for and how closely you look.

To very great cities that are pretty close together. Can't really pick one. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Climate are about the same temperature wise, but in the summers in Atlanta, the humidity melts you.

I've read some stupid comments. According to the census, Charlotte is bigger than atlanta. Atlantas metropolitan population is only bigger because all of the major cities in georiga geographicly are located around the center of the state. That is why atlantas MSA is 6 million. As for Charlotte only having a MSA of 2.5 million, it is because Charlotte is the only major city in that region of nc. Most of nc's population is in the center of the state (5 million).

Charlotte's first population boom was in the late 1700s. A little kid found some gold. Then there was a gold rush. Then they made US mints. Then smart ppl decided it would be a good idea to make banks and what not.

That explains the diversity of companies between the two cities.

If the question is economy then there is no doubt Charlotte will ever catch up with ATL.

If the question is culture ATL gets the nod on diversity, arts, & sports, etc...

If the question is quality of life - I live in the suburbs of ATL (Newnan 40 miles from downtown)and it is excellent. I am planning to move to Charlotte soon for a new job, and looking forward to it. I think a location is what you make it.

Charlotte should not worry about matching ATL economically, but seek cultural growth and the economic strength will follow.

To answer your question - yes the article was for the state general assembly. If it were not for the state leadership located in ATL would not be a great city.

all cities are good and bad . to live in a large city unlike a small town you must nake your community your small town . when you do that you have small town living with the amenities of the large city.i lived in atlanta for 25 years in charlotte for 30 . i can make more money in atlanta by accident than working 60 hour weeks in charlotte .

Of course Atlanta is better...I have heard from native Charlotteans this or that is "just like Atlanta", well that's true if you are comparing it to Atlanta 25 years ago. Charlotte does not have the diversity, culture or infrastructure to compete. It is a big small town and if that is what you like, thats fine...but stop comparing "apples to oranges".

Marthasvill/Atlanta, Georgia is ten times better than Charlotte/Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Charlotte is our little sister.
