Blue Line or Green Line?

Should the existing Blue Line be renamed the Green Line, to please UNCC? Tomorrow the Metropolitan Transit Commission takes up the discussion at its 5:30 p.m. meeting. Here's a link to the meeting agenda.

At first, it sounds like an easy and simple decision: The transit line that's planned to run from uptown to UNC Charlotte should be the Green Line, to reflect the 49ers school colors.

But with transit – and transportation in general – things are rarely as simple as you'd think. Here's the biggest sticking point: The new line will be a continuation of the existing Blue Line. That is, you could hop on at I-485 outside Pineville and ride all the way to beyond UNCC.

There's already been significant investment in "Blue." Even the train cars are blue, not to mention the signs, etc.

As CATS officials note, they couldn't find any other transit system that "changed colors midstream" (hmmm, interesting turn of phrase). It might well confuse riders. I mean, we're not talking a lot of riders here with New York-caliber subway expertise (where one line simultaneously might have two numbers or letters or colors, and you have to notice whether you're hopping on a local or an express route, for instance). Starting on the blue line and ending on the green line might be as confusing as starting out on Woodlawn and, without turning, finding yourself on Runnymede and then Sharon Road then Wendover, and then Eastway. Or maybe Tyvola to Fairview to Sardis to Rama. Or ... well, I could go on but I won't.

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, a Blue-to-Green Line transit corridor fits right in. How very Charlotte.

It wouldn't be a normal day in Charlotte if UNCC didn't have something to complain about. Perhaps they don't realize that Charlotte is not a college town and the city most certainly doesn't revolve around them. I have nothing against UNCC, but really, asking the city to change it to the green line for their school colors?! They should probably continue concentrating their efforts on their forthcoming football team.

WashuOtaku said...

It should be left alone as Blue. It doesn't make any sense at this point to adjust things just to please a school; if they want transit to have Green somewhere, they could build a mini-rail line on campus.

Anonymous said...

Simple solution: sell the naming rights to help fund the line. Let's see if UNCC will pony up some more money to help fund it.

I don't know about blue/green, but can the North Corridor -- if it is ever built -- please be renamed the Red line instead of Purple? Although since that would match the colors of Davidson College Wild-CATS, perhaps UNCC would need to get its way as well.

Chris said...

The line isn't being built for UNCC. Who cares if they want it to be "green". They should be thankful the line will reach to their commuter college outpost.

Anonymous said...

Why not? Since Charlotte loves to name roads haphazardly, it follows that we should do the same with transit. While we're at it, I'm sure we could find new and creative ways to re-number the gates and terminals at CLT to really confuse the heck out of air travelers.

Anonymous said...

Leave it up to the idiots trolls (Chris) of Charlotte to post negative comments about UNC Charlotte. I'm sure very few of you have set foot on the campus. The community refuses to embrace for our school in anything else, why expect it for this?

Anonymous said...

Keep it Blue. Unless a line splits off somewhere or has a different route altogether, it make no sense to call it the Green Line just to show some school spirit. heck even in New York, the subway lines keep the same color, though their letter and number names split off, ie, the 4,5,6.

Anonymous said...

How about giving it a memorable name, one that will cause all riders to pause and ponder?

The name I suggest: "The $1.6 Billion Line". (Original $465 million cost of the original Blue Line plus the $1.12 billion or more it will cost to extend light rail to UNCC.)

Anonymous said...

Anon at 02:25 pm:

You must be an optimist.

The name I like is the "Alternative" line.

We're spending $1.6 billion on toys, when alternatively that money could have been put to a better use.

Anonymous said...

Your Woodlawn example is incorrect. You have to turn multiple times (at lights even) to follow the route you described.

But of course, what else should we expect. You just write whatever you "feel" anyway. Facts and rational analysis are clearly superflous.

Anonymous said...

If it goes to the Speedway they should call it the Red(neck) line.

Anonymous said...

Go Niners, but leave the name of the line alone. I'm not sure what benefit would justify the expense and confusion. I do think light rail to the campus will help better integrate the school with the rest of the city.

"The line isn't being built for UNCC. Who cares if they want it to be "green". They should be thankful the line will reach to their commuter college outpost."

"Chris," you sir, are an idiot. Have you ever set foot on the UNCC campus? I highly doubt it. If you had, you would see that it is much more than a "commuter college outpost." In reality, it's the fourth largest, and fastest growing University in NC. Not only that, but it is projected to be running neck-and-neck with NCSU as the largest University in the state by 2015. So, how about you think before you belch such idiotic comments.

Anonymous said...

leave it alone - in fact, don't even discuss it. People are hurting BAD right now, and it's even a consideration?

Anonymous said...

Apparently in the minds of the UNCC crowd, excuse me (University of?) "Charlotte" (University?) bigger=better? And that cow college in Raleigh is your example? UNCC is a suitcase school for losers who can't get into a real college. Always has been, always will be. Football will not change that.

ALMOST as dumb as the people that thought Charlotte needed a 4th Tier, For-Profit Law School that enriches its shareholders by selling an impossible dreams to legions of underqualified applicants.

Anonymous said...

Uh, maybe this should have been discussed before now. Someone needs to tell the UNCC crowd the time has passed.

Why is this so difficult?

Anonymous said...

It shouldn't be built.

But if it IS going to be built, it should be named the Red Line in honor of all of the red ink we're going to have to start using when we're working with budget numbers.

Anonymous said...

UNCC should just change their colors to incorporate Blue...

Anonymous said...

I thought UNC was Tarheel blue?

Anonymous said...

The BLUE line has ORANGE overpasses!

(I never understood this and I live here, great way to confuse tourists and visitors)

So you can stay on the same train and the BLUE line with ORANGE overpasses will morph into the GREEN line?

This is entirely too confusing. One train, one color name, one color paint. Please!

MAYBE YOU SHOULD GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU PUT STUPID COMMENTS ON THIS WEBSITE. ACTUALLY 92 PERCENT OF UNCC STUDENTS LIVE WITHIN A MILE OF THE CAMPUS.

EVERYONE WHO IS BASHING UNCC SHOULD TAKE A RIDE UP TO THE UNIVERSITY AREA AND TAKE A LOOK. IT WILL SOON BE THE SECOND LARGEST COLLEGE IN NORTH CAROLINA AND HAS ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED PRECISION METROLOGY CENTERS IN THE WORLD. THEY DO RESEARCH FOR SEVERAL COMPANIES SUCH AS BOEING, CATEPILLAR, AND MANY MORE.

My third rate education has rewarded me handsomely thank you very much. Six figure job, bonuses, top of the line home. Amazing what can be accomplished with such a minimal education. If that qualifies me as a loser, I hope I keep losing

What constitutes a winning / winners education anyway...ACC basketball? ACC football? A few PHd's that hate America? Not sure I understand your point but then again my minimal education does not allow for such advanced thought.

That's said, leave the name blue. If it costs money to change the name of the line don't bother.

That is probably the dumbest comment I've read on this site in quite some time, and that's saying a lot! You obviously know absolutely nothing about UNCC. I guess you're forgetting about the fact that UNCC has one of the best engineering schools in the country, one of the best architecture schools on the east coast, one of the best business schools as well as great teaching and nursing programs just to name a few. Yep, I guess you're right, just a school for losers (sarcasm). Sometimes its better to keep your ignorance to yourself there champ. The only loser here is you.

Anonymous said...

Wouldnt it just be easier for UNCC to change their school Colors? Who would notice? While they are at it they could change their mascot. I mean what is a 49er? its someone who moved out to CA in 1849.

Chris said...

Wow...must have touched a nerve.

My point was that UNCC should be thankful that the line is coming to them at all which will connect the campus, which is far out (outpost) and that it is well known that many students commute by car to the university. Hopefully, one day the train will change that pattern.

I did not make any comments regarding the quality of the education or the institution. Seems you are just a touch insecure.

Again Dummy 92 percent of UNCC students live within a mile of the campus. UNCC students drive no further that NCSU students. NCSU is very spread out.

For one who doesnt know what a 49er is, its not for the gold rush of 1849, its for 1949 when the school became a college! Know your history and facts people!

Anonymous said...

Actually Chris, the overwhelming majority of UNCC students live within a few miles of the University. Only a small minority of students drive more than 10 miles to the campus. Of those who do drive the longer distances, most of them are adult students who are taking night classes, etc...

You were in fact, implying that UNCC is a second-rate commuter school with your comment: "They should be thankful the line will reach to their commuter college outpost." Maybe you didn't mean it to sound that way, but you should choose your words a little better in future posts.

To the sad individual who posted: "UNCC is a suitcase school for losers who can't get into a real college." Wow, you are so obviously ignorant of any factual information about UNCC, its pretty evident you shouldn't post anything in this conversation at all. Might I ask what "holier than thou" prestigious institution you attended? Obviously, it had to have been a campus large enough that you could easily park your high-horse on campus comfortably.

Jon said...

I think it is justified to change the line. I lived in Chicago for years, the cars are labeled with signs in the window that show the color, they are vinyl and spin on a spool, it is easy to change the color once the line reaches the post. I think it would make it easier for people to understand what direction they are going in. Chicago's Purple Line runs to Northwestern, Chicago's Red Line runs past UC & Loyola (both red). I think Charlotte should make a bigger effort to link itself with one of the strongest public universities in the southeast.

Second, I am ashamed at all of the people here bashing UNCC. UNCC is a bright spot for a southern city with little distinguishing character. We are a generic city, slap a new name on some signs and no one would notice, UNCC is a unique University, a research facility, if the city would embrace it and bring it into the fold, we would likely be able to attract more jobs and fortune 500 companies.

Mia said...

It should stay the blue line, renaming for a college/university that does not really have much standing in this town is silly. The rail has been a boon to this region and more focus should be on extending it, not changing the line color.

Anonymous said...

What is most comical is all the people on here desperately trying to convince anonymous posters in cyberspace that UNCC is somehow regionally or nationally relevant...

Anonymous said...

Mia has joined Chris as one of the idiots that should think before they run their mouth. Have either one you ever stepped foot on the UNC Charlotte campus? What college did you go to? Let's hear it so we can all hear how amazing you are and how much better your life is.

JAT said...

Maybe CATS can get a deal on the that paint Jeff Gordon used to use -- you know, the stuff that changed colors depending on the light and angle.

And to second Mary, how typically Charlotte to argue over this junk.

Besides, dj is 100% correct it is the Yadda Yadda Yadda Line in honor of Phil Dubois whoring out his University to the Chamber and the Uptown Crowd.

Anonymous said...

Change to the Green line. This city has been turning its back on our own school long enough, and with all the reaching out they have done, we should reach back.

Anonymous said...

Jon, I see you are using insight, rational thought, and complete sentences. That isn't going to go over well with most of the O's readership.

I would think that most people in this area would embrace UNC Charlotte for purely selfish reasons if nothing else. It is well documented that having a large universty in your town contributes to the financial success of the area. For instance, TIAA-CREF specifically chose to move here because of UNC Charlotte. As a home owner, I like having this "engine" working for me. I will take all of the help that I can get these days.

For those posters bashing the university, do you think that UNC-Chapel Hill is going to move to Charlotte just because you bought a blue shirt at Walmart? UNC Charlotte is our university. Support it. Wake up.

Unknown said...

To be honest, I don't think 99% of the UNCC population give a rat's behind what the line is called. I think the idea was probably raised once, and someone has run with it as an issue.

And for those on here that want to put down UNCC for this issue here, it sad. It really says a lot about people who try to make themselves look intelligent by demeaning others. I feel sorry for those people. You really have some issues going on inside of yourselves that you need to get worked out.

Anonymous said...

All of the signs will need to change once the line is extended anyway, so I suppose it won't cost much more to change the name. It seems kind of silly to me to do it just for a school at one end of a rail line (no offense to the '49ers of course!!). But if it's of significant meaning to the city and the campus, go for it. Won't change the way I get to work every day (and yes I take the light rail and love it!)

Anonymous said...

Let UNCC change their school colors if they see it as a legitimate issue!

Anonymous said...

Change it to green. It's not like it will confuse anybody ... It's the ONLY line. ...and take a couple of years to change the signs and the stripes ... again, it's the ONLY line.

Anonymous said...

What does it matter? If you are 30 or over we will all be dead and gone by the time they get it built anyway!

Anonymous said...

Why does the train color have to match the line color anyway? Metro trains in DC are all the same color; Marta trains in Atlanta are the same color; the EL in Chicago is all the same color. Don't think the world would end if there was a blue train on the green line.....

Anonymous said...

Sure why not, run the green line to UNCC. Then rename the blue line "The Carolina Blue Line"

Anonymous said...

Oh, joy!!! Another great idea from our local thinktank. We should definitely change the color of the Blue Line to the Green Line to cure UNCC's problem of not having an identity. They are so jealous of the real UNC at Chapel Hill. We could call that route The Shaft as all of the taxpayers consider it to be now.

Anonymous said...

What difference does the color make? Those kids are just looking forward until the line is open between UNCC and the clubs in uptown Charlotte. I've seen all kinds of colors when those characters blow chunks after a night of clubbing.

Anonymous said...

How about calling it the Maginot Line? Seems to fit...

Anonymous said...

Seems UNCC could change its color to blue to match the line

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there were 5 corridors planned for the light rail (East Charlotte, University, Lake Norman, South Blvd, and the Airport). What is the big deal with Changing the name to the Green Line? It's not going to confuse anyone. I hate seeing and hearing all of the UNCC haters on here that bash everything and anything related to the school. I bet if Chapel Hill was on the corridor, they would change it to the baby blue line. It's not going to cost anyone anything to change the name to the green line, so just do it. The University area is the fastest growing area of Charlotte, therefore, a line to the area is a no-brainer. There are some real unintelligent people posting on here! Figure it out!

Go NINERS!!!!!

Anonymous said...

UNCC has just invested a ton of money in a new building in Uptown that will debut next year. This line should be called the green line b/c UNCC is what made that area and it's a natural fit. Why is everyone so up-in-arms and hating on UNCC b/c it was suggested? Do you really hate the University that much? UNCC is a fine instuition and is very important to the city and area for recruitment of businesses. They should feel like a part of the city, so just give it to them!

I don't even know what to say to the light rail haters! I know it's an expensive venture and project, but it's needed for the future and planning. Did you idiots not read about how the city will recoup the entire investment of the rail-line 3-fold over the next 10 years!?! It'll spur growth along the rail line just like it has on South Blvd. Or do you ass-backwards people want to go back to the horse and buggy days!

Anonymous said...

Why not revert to a little Alexander Julian and name it the teal line, to please all. No one could decide if it was really blue or green anyway..

Anonymous said...

Uhhh, check out the BART. It keeps the same trains, but changes the name of the line to respond to where the end of the line where the train is headed...no Blue/Red/Green, etc., but Fremont, etc. So it could be the Pineville (I realiz it doesn't bo there yet), the UNCC (could be Concord), and whatever...Monroe, anyone? line. No trains have to change, but the silly, artificial color themed thing can just go away...like the trains in a big city.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't name it the Green Line unless UNCC ponies up to pay for at least part of it...right now they're just milking the City/State/feds for all they're worth and just "allowing" the system to access campus for free.

San Francisco has changed the color of its MUNI lines. They are referred to by letter (J,K,L,M,N,F)but the background color associated with each letter has recently changed.

Still, no reason to change the color for the whole line. It could easily and sensibly be blue to center city and then green to UNCC. But I wold just leave it alone and thank my lucky stars I had light rail to my campus. It's not even built yet and they're complaining. Stop complaining over trivia and give thanks. It's not just your line, anyway, it will serve the whole North Tryon corridor.

2:40 you are so wrong. You only have to turn twice-once onto Sharon at Runnymede and once onto Wendover at Sharon. This dog leg was built to save the Myers Park CC golf course from destruction back in the 60s. Otherwise, the road just changes names willy-nilly. Once long ago, of course, they were separate roads and they didn't connect at all.

You're not from around here, I take it. :)

JE said...

I like the idea of calling it the green line from uptown to UNCC and the blue line from uptown to Pineville. Just have the signage indicate all lines head to uptown. The line out to Matthews will eventually spur off of the blue line, and it will have a diff. color, so what's the difference here? Have the automated voice on each train announce the color/line change when the transportation center stop is reached. Also, this extension would NEVER qualify for fed $$ if the line didn't include UNCC stops. They are the ones that increase ridership enough to build this line at all. So, a little appreciation is warranted I think.

Bad idea. Either change the entire line to green, or don't change it all. It'll just confuse people to have the train suddenly change it's route designation right in the middle of the line. It'll make it difficult to give directions. We'll end up with stops with different designations for the color(Blue Line Woodlawn station, Green Line UNCC station) even though it's the same train that will take you from to/from those stations. Which means everyone will need to be told it's the same train, and you don't have to get off one and on another, etc. Why even consider that? We already know how confusing it is to tell people to take Tyvola to Fairview to Sardis To Rama to Idlewild - yet they are all the same road. Let's not repeat the past and add confusing.

Even the planning commitment reviewed other cities and stated that the lines don't change right in the middle of them. New York, Philadelphia, Boston, or Washington, for examples).

For the guy who said UNC Charlotte is a school for those who can't get into a real college.

What an absolutely ridiculous comment. I chose UNC Charlotte over other premier schools in North Carolina. After taking visits to other colleges Charlotte felt like the perfect fit. Fantastic facilities, academics, and not to mention the drastic improvements that are currently and have been made over the past few years. Being an aspiring business major, I want to be a part of one of the largest business markets in the nation. I chose to come to to UNC Charlotte because it is a great school. Fortunately, I wasn't brainwashed by the Observer to only aspire to go to an ACC school. As for citizens of Charlotte, what is the big deal? Take pride in our university! If you honestly believe "green line" will confuse someone then you have something personal against the school. The green line would not confuse people, but it would only make people more likely not to get confused. Obviously the green line will stand out and it should be quite apparent that it is going to UNCC. Finally, I encourage people to go out and get your Charlotte 49ers Football FSL. We are in dire need of public support and every bit of help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I went to HS @ MP and live right around the corner. Hence, why I know that you have to turn MULTIPLE times to follow that route. However, you do not have to turn at all to accomplish the Tyvola/Fairview/Sardis/Rama/Idlewild traverse.

While I presume from what you wrote that you are from "around here", I can only assume you went to Dub-C if you don't know what the word "multiple" means.

To those of you UNC Charlotte naysayers, why not check this Friday event out... http://www.publicrelations.uncc.edu/default.asp?id=15&objId=549. I think you'd be impressed.

The Mechanical Engineering Motorsports Center in the William States Lee College of Engineering will unveil the fifth largest and newest water tunnel in the United States, Friday, May 29. Of the several hundred water tunnels in the country, UNC Charlotte’s is ranked with tunnels at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and U.S. Naval facilities.

The performance of UNC Charlotte’s water tunnel surpassed tunnels at the University of Minnesota and NASA Dryden. Currently, the water tunnel has a flow rate of 1,000 liters per second and trials have only reached 60 percent of rated speed.

Come on, visit the campus. You might be surprised, or are you that stubborn minded not to see what the future of higher education in NC is?

Let's call the line the I can't believe it's not butter line.

Anonymous said...

Wow!!! I can't believe how many citizens in Charlotte are trying to criticize the major research institution in the region. The university benefits the region by providing the most potential employees for the city. With that logic, one would assume that if they were a local business owner they would want the most highly qualified individuals to help grow their business. Even if their not a business owner, one would also assume that if they live in Charlotte they would want the region to strive economically, and again part of that would be dependent upon how highly educated the candidates are from largest provider to the region (UNC Charlotte). It seems to me that if you live in Charlotte and you are criticizing UNC Charlotte, you are only wishing for minimal success in your own city.

From an outsider it seems the school embraces the city, but the city doesn't embrace the school to the same extent. In fact, not only does it not embrace the school it tries to knock it down. Seems like very faulty logic.

As a couple of others have already mentioned, the line to the university hasn't been built. You don't have to change the colors of the cars to name the line. So there isn't an additional cost. In fact, I would assume that having a specific car dedicated to a specific line would be a bad idea and be cost ineffective. maybe in the future the Pineville leg has less riders so they might need to move some cars to the Huntersville line. This would be easier to just move one car from one line other, rather than buying a new car because it needs to be the same color and having the car on the Pineville leg just sit because it is the wrong color.

Also, others have mentioned that it's idiotic to change the name of the line in mid trip. Most places have a main hub. In the case of Charlotte it would be downtown. In my opinion, any line from downtown would be considered it's own line. Is that really that complicated where people would get confused?

So finally, I'm for naming the University corridor the green line. There's no additional expense. And if the University feels it might help in branding their school then great. I do not see that as complaining by the school. I see it as a request. What's good for UNC Charlotte should be good for Charlotte.

Good over the childish belittling. I really can't believe that adults have posted the comments that have been made. Try to see what harm does it really cause and what may benefit the city you live in the most.

Great post. Again, try to get past the childish bickering and comments. Light rail has already happened and is going to continue. That's not the point of the original editorial. The point of the original editorial was whether the line to University City should be named the Green Line or continue with the Blue Line name.

I'm guessing none of the posters here went to the MTC meeting last month where this was discussed - as well as naming the North Corridor the Red Line for Davidson College. I don't think even Ms Newsom was there.

It is telling though that the naming of the lines gets more coverage by Ms Newsom along with 80+ comments than the actually important issues. You know, little issues like how these lines are going to be financed, who's going to get screwed when the money runs out, and the raising of all sorts of taxes from sales taxes on through TIFs, higher property taxes, and eventually higher fees.

Look over hear everybody. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Gadfly definition from Wiki...

"Gadfly" is a term for people who upset the status quo by posing upsetting or novel questions, or just being an irritant.

The term "gadfly" was used by Plato in the Apology to describe Socrates' relationship of uncomfortable goad to the Athenian political scene, which he compared to a slow and dimwitted horse.
That's about right I suppose...

Sorry anon, building these lines won't screw me out of anything. I'm going to make money on both of them because I just happen to be one of the lucky few who own property near proposed stops. I'll probably even ride them regularly.

For me, the tax issue is more of a principle thing. I'll do whatever I can to prevent the government from taking from one person and arbitrarily giving it to someone else - even if that someone is me. But at the end of the day if they insist - I'll take it.

Instead of resenting your intended insult, I suppose I should be thanking you for the extra change in my pocket.

Mary? Do you live in the real world? Why don't you ever write a blog about something that does not entail government intervention?

Cool, since we're on this color naming scheme, let's name the West line the "Black Line" to reflect the colors of that side of town.
